Webinar to Explain 5 Art Therapy Techniques to Reduce Anxiety

Edmond, Oklahoma – February 9, 2020 – Abbi Mae Designs, located in Edmond, Oklahoma, is hosting a webinar on Wednesday, February 12, at 8 pm. Abbi Simons, who owns Abbi Mae Designs, has benefited working with art therapy for her mental health while working with clients who support the same cause.

Adrian Hill, an artist who is considered the founder of art therapy, discovered the idea while recovering from tuberculosis in a sanatorium. He would eventually start working with other patients with art therapy after realizing its benefits. Hill said, "I [began] to visualise a nebulous panacea for boredom, a form of escape which would combine the virtues of a creative and curative value."

The webinar will explain five art therapy techniques to reduce anxiety. Poem Collage is creating a poem from a pool of inspiring words collected from print mediums that can help self-criticism. Family sculpture is using modeling clay; creating family members in abstract form can help express what their personalities might be to children and or adults. Drawing is an activity child can use to express themselves by drawing what is on their mind. An activity that is good drawing expression is Zentangle. Zentangles are patterns drawn by an individual with their random designs. Quilting is a therapeutic activity while also communicating a message. Painting provides an "emotional release or outlet" who struggles with stress. Painting offers a relaxing activity for adults and children to express themselves.

Simons' wanted to create a webinar that educates the community as well as support other events her client's support. One client being, Lady Bird Fabrics, teaches classes on quilting to children and adults as a way to deal with anxiety. Ann White, the owner of Lady Bird Fabrics, said her goal is to reach others who have dealt with trauma.

"I'd love to be a resource for community and education, including reaching different socioeconomic levels, and kids who are dealing with trauma and chaos."
